Greubel Forsey's Final Balancier Convexe S², Black and White Ceramic Limited Edition
This is a lightweight farewell to one of the sportiest versions of Greubel Forsey's meticulously crafted pieces. wholesale replica watches
Greubel Forsey appears to be undergoing a brand reinvention. Last year, they bid farewell to the collector-favorite Balancier Contemporain watch. Subsequently, co-founder Stephen Forsey stepped down from the brand's board of directors, though the brand still bears his name. Andy Hoffman detailed the changes in an interview with CEO Michel Nydegger. Nydegger has been leading the brand's shift from short-lived price reductions to smaller, higher-priced models, with a focus on improving wearing comfort. And today, with the end of another era, the brand is bidding farewell to the Balancier Convexe S² (launched in 2021) with two limited-edition watches, each limited to 11 pieces, featuring either white or black ceramic with a rose gold bezel and case back.
While the Balancier Contemporain, like the Balancier Convexe S², features a large front balance wheel, its design and case style are slightly more traditional. The Balancier Convexe S² employs a curved, variable geometry case and crystal, with a case diameter of 41.5 mm, a bezel width of 44 mm, and a thickness of 13.25 mm (14.8 mm including the synthetic sapphire crystal), fitting perfectly on the wrist. The brand places most of the visible gears on the dial front, with the hour and minute hands positioned on a suspended arched bridge, and equipped with a 30° tilted Greubel Forsey balance wheel system. Its water resistance is only 30 meters, therefore, despite its sporty design, it requires the same care as a fine online shopping replica watches.
This curved case is exceptionally comfortable to wear (based on my previous experience with similar watches), combining the sporty feel of brands like Richard Mille with a craftsmanship and technology (including the case material) that far surpasses Richard Mille watches in the same price range. The movement dial features multi-layered skeletonized suspended bridges with straight-grained polishing, and the chamfers and countersunk holes are also polished. The movement is adorned with oval-shaped gold jewel bearings throughout.
The movement side has a more understated design, but also features a gold baseplate engraved with the limited edition number, chamfers and countersunk holes with circular-textured polishing, and straight-grained side plates. The movement vibrates at 21,600 vibrations per hour and is equipped with two coaxially connected high-speed rotating mainspring barrels (rotating once every 3.2 hours), one of which has a sliding balance spring to prevent excessive tension, providing a 72-hour power reserve. These timepieces (also limited to 11 pieces each) are pricey, but their exquisite craftsmanship is a testament to their high quality as exemplary sports haute horlogerie.
Our Thoughts
I've always been interested in Greubel Forsey and am delighted to have had the opportunity to cover it more frequently over the past few years. Some have described it as "Richard Mille," but with a greater emphasis on meticulous finishing and traditional watchmaking techniques. I think that description still holds true. While Greubel Forsey has always been known for its escapements and balance wheels (and their handcrafted collections), they've also begun to add more complications to their product line, no longer confined to oversized GMT watches.
The Balancier Convexe S2, while featuring a simpler design, is difficult to surpass in terms of quality. The intricate geometry of the case, dial, and hands showcases an extreme pursuit of detail, while the exquisite finishing further enhances its perfection.
