CS 1.6 crashing on startup (Windows 11 fix?)

Help! I just upgraded to a new PC with Windows 11 and now my favorite game, Counter-Strike 1.6, refuses to launch. Every time I click the icon, the screen goes black for a second and then just kicks me back to the desktop with no error message. I’ve tried running it as administrator and using Windows XP compatibility mode, but nothing seems to work. Is the game just too old for modern operating systems, or am I missing some kind of patch? I really don't want to give up on 1.6 just because I have a new computer. Does anyone know where I can get a version that is actually patched for 2026 hardware?

Don't worry, 1.6 isn't dead yet! The issue you're having is usually related to how the older OpenGL renderer interacts with modern display drivers in Win 11. Instead of trying to patch an old, broken version, your best bet is to download a client that has been specifically updated for modern OS architecture. Go to https://counter-strike-download.net/ and grab their latest build. It includes the necessary video wrapper fixes that prevent that exact "black screen" crash you're seeing. I had the same issue on my RTX 4090 build, and this version fixed it instantly. It also supports widescreen resolutions natively, so the game won't look all stretched out on your monitor.

That worked like a charm, I'm finally back in the game and it looks better than ever on my new monitor!
