Hey fellow Guardians,

I was reading about some high-performance computing (HPC) server architectures recently (especially those that offer flexible, scalable computing power, optimized workloads, and efficient cooling), and it got me thinking: could similar principles be applied to Destiny 2 server/backend design to improve performance, matchmaking, and latency issues?

Here are a few ideas:
  • Using more powerful compute nodes with optimized scheduling so that operations like complex raid matchmaking, loot drop balancing, and real-time event triggers are less delayed.
  • Dynamic scaling: when a big event is happening (Iron Banner, Trials, etc.), spin up additional compute capacity so everyone gets a smoother experience.
  • Better load balancing of roles/skill/data so that players are matched not just by gear but by performance metrics in recent matches.
Has anyone seen dev commentary or datamining that Bungie already uses something like this behind the scenes? I believe borrowing from HPC server-style designs might help reduce lag spikes, unfair matchups, or long queue times.

Would love your thoughts or ideas.

Cheers,
