A couple months ago I got pulled into helping my brother figure out what to do with the driveway at his house in Beaverton. The old concrete was cracked everywhere and parts of it had started sinking a bit, probably from years of rain and tree roots pushing under it. At first he thought maybe it could just be patched, but once we started looking closer it was obvious the whole thing needed to be replaced. I spent a few weekends helping him measure things and move stuff out of the way, and that’s when we realized how much work actually goes into a concrete project. It’s not just pouring cement and waiting for it to dry. You’ve got grading, forming, drainage, and all that prep work before anything even gets poured. We started asking around locally because a few houses in his neighborhood had new patios and retaining walls installed recently. Some of those looked really clean and well finished, while others already had small cracks after only a year. That made him pretty careful about who he wanted to hire because a driveway or patio is something you expect to last a long time. I never thought I’d spend so much time learning about concrete, but now I understand why people look for contractors with actual experience around the Portland area.
