A thermal oxidizer is an best-air pollution control device designed to break down hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), The basic principle behind a thermal oxidizer is simple: it uses high heat to chemically oxidize pollutants before they are released into the atmosphere.
In operation, contaminated air is directed into a combustion chamber where it is heated to a very high temperature, usually between 1,200°F and 2,000°F. This temperature range is carefully maintained because it ensures that the pollutants are destroyed effectively. The process relies on three main factors often referred to as the “three T’s”: temperature, time, and turbulence. The air must be hot enough, remain in the chamber long enough, and be thoroughly mixed with oxygen for complete oxidation to occur.
There are different types of thermal oxidizers, such as direct-fired, recuperative, and regenerative thermal oxidizers (RTOs). RTOs are widely used today because they recycle heat within the system, making them more energy-efficient.
Industries that typically use thermal oxidizers include chemical manufacturing, petroleum refineries, paint and coating operations, pharmaceuticals, food processing, and printing. Essentially, any industry that generates VOCs or hazardous gases as a byproduct may rely on these systems to comply with environmental regulations.
