Box braids are a classic protective style, but their weight can put a strain on your scalp if not managed correctly. The foundation of a healthy install is "tension management." Ensure your braider does not pull your edges too tight, as this can lead to traction alopecia. Once installed, your focus should be on cleanliness and moisture. You don't need to wash the full length of the hair braids frequently, but you should cleanse your scalp every 7–10 days using a cotton pad dipped in diluted witch hazel or a specialised scalp cleanser. This removes sweat and product buildup without causing the braids to frizz.
To keep your natural hair from breaking, apply a lightweight oil like peppermint or tea tree oil to your parts to stimulate blood flow and soothe itching. Always wear a silk scarf at night to keep the roots flat. Box braids can safely stay in for 6 to 8 weeks. During the takedown, be patient and use a detangling cream at the base to remove the "lint knots" that naturally form.
