My car cranks strongly but won't start and I smell gasoline

I need some help from people who understand cars better than I do because I'm getting really frustrated and worried. I have a 2016 Ford Focus that has been giving me trouble for the past few days. The car cranks really strongly when I turn the key, the battery seems fine, the starter sounds healthy, but the engine just won't catch and start. It cranks and cranks and cranks but never fires up. The weird thing is that after I try to start it a few times, I can smell raw gasoline really strongly, like the engine is getting fuel but something else is wrong. I've tried waiting a few hours and trying again, same problem. I've tried pressing the gas pedal a little while cranking, same problem. I'm not a mechanic but I've been reading online trying to figure out what could cause this. I found an easy guide for fixing a car that won't start that talked about checking for spark, fuel, and compression, but I don't know how to check any of those things myself. The gasoline smell makes me think fuel is getting to the engine but maybe the spark plugs aren't firing or maybe something is wrong with the ignition system. Has anyone else had this problem where their car cranks fine but won't start and they can smell fuel? What ended up being the problem and how much did it cost to fix? Could it be something as simple as bad spark plugs or a faulty ignition coil, or am I looking at something more serious like a timing belt issue or a bad fuel injector? I really don't want to just start replacing expensive parts guessing. Also, is there any way to test if the spark plugs are firing without special tools? I'm pretty handy with basic things but I've never worked on cars much. Any step by step advice for a beginner would be so appreciated because I can't afford to have my car sitting dead for a week while I save up for a mechanic.
