Is April-end a good time for Chardham or should we wait till May?

April-end is the best time to go. More pilgrims need to know this.

The dhams open between April 19 and 23. In the first two weeks after opening, temples are accessible, queues are short, roads are clear, and hotel rates are 20 to 30 percent lower than peak May prices. You get the same darshan with a fraction of the crowd.

The one preparation April demands is warm clothing. Kedarnath sits at 3,583 metres and Badrinath at 3,133 metres. Snow is still present on surrounding peaks in late April and temperatures at night drop below 5 degrees. Pack thermals, a heavy jacket, and waterproof shoes regardless of what the Delhi weather tells you when you leave.

By May 15 the pilgrim rush peaks. Hotels charge peak rates, vehicles are harder to secure, and darshan queues at Kedarnath stretch to three and four hours. The spiritual experience does not improve with more crowd.

Book your tempo traveller on rent in Delhi for late April dates before the end of February. April slots fill up faster than most people expect because more pilgrims are shifting to the opening window to avoid the May rush.
