Hey everyone,

I'm looking to make a Tulsi Basil Simple Syrup and would love some tips! I know the basics of simple syrup (sugar + water), but I want to maximize the aroma and flavor of tulsi without making it bitter. Should I use fresh or dried leaves? How long should I steep them? Also, any suggestions on the best sugar-to-water ratio for cocktails or teas?

Would love to hear from anyone who has experimented with this. Thanks in advance!

Fresh tulsi leaves work best for a vibrant, aromatic syrup, but dried can also be used if fresh isn’t available. To avoid bitterness, steep the leaves after the syrup has cooled slightly (around 70°C / 160°F) for 10-15 minutes, then strain. A good starting ratio for Tulsi Basil Simple Syrup is 1:1 sugar to water (for general use) or 2:1 for a richer, cocktail-friendly syrup. For extra depth, try adding a splash of lemon juice to brighten the flavor. If using dried leaves, use about half the amount compared to fresh.
