How to Lower CPC in Adult Commercials without killing ROAS?

Has anyone else noticed how tricky it is to balance costs and returns with Adult Commercials? I’ve been experimenting for a while now, and it always feels like when I push CPC down, performance drops… and when I aim for better ROAS, costs suddenly spike.

At one point, I was honestly just guessing. I’d tweak bids randomly, switch creatives too often, or target broad audiences thinking it would “optimize itself.” Spoiler: it didn’t. My CPC stayed high, and conversions were all over the place. It felt like I was spending more time fixing things than actually improving anything.

What started helping me was slowing down and testing one thing at a time. I realized my biggest mistake was changing too many variables together. When I focused on just creatives for a few days, I could actually see which ones pulled clicks cheaper. Same with targeting — narrowing things slightly (not too much) surprisingly reduced wasted spend.

Another thing I noticed was that cheaper clicks don’t always mean better results. Some low CPC placements brought in traffic that didn’t convert at all. So instead of chasing the lowest cost, I began looking at which ads brought consistent conversions, even if they were slightly more expensive. That shift alone improved my ROAS more than anything else.

Also, frequency mattered more than I expected. Showing the same ad too often made performance drop, so rotating a few variations kept things fresh without overcomplicating it.

I’m still figuring things out, but the biggest takeaway so far is: don’t chase cheap clicks blindly. Small, controlled tweaks seem to work better than constant big changes. Curious if others have found a better way to balance both?
