I’ve been taking care of my mom for the past few years, and while I love being there for her, sometimes I feel like I’m running on empty. Between work, errands, and caregiving, it’s hard to find even an hour to myself. A friend mentioned respite care, but I’m not sure how it really works in practice. Does it actually give caregivers enough of a break to recharge, or is it just another thing to coordinate that adds more stress?

When my aunt was caring for my grandfather, she felt the same way. Eventually, she tried bringing in support for a few hours each week, and it really eased the pressure. It gave her the freedom to go shopping, visit friends, or simply nap without feeling guilty. We found New Century, and honestly, it turned out to be the best decision. They’re known as the best home care agency Philadelphia has to offer, and the whole experience made my aunt less burned out. She finally felt like she could balance her life again without neglecting him.

Sometimes people underestimate how draining constant caregiving can be. Even if someone loves the person they care for, the lack of downtime takes a toll over time. I’ve noticed that when families bring in a little outside support, the mood at home shifts too. The person being cared for gets more social interaction, and the caregiver looks and feels healthier. It seems like a small change, but it can ripple out into a much more positive environment overall.
