Hi everyone,

I’ve been exploring edge computing and its growing importance in real-time systems. Many applications today - like IoT devices, video streaming, online gaming, and industrial automation—require instant data processing. Traditional cloud models sometimes introduce delays because data must travel to centralized servers and back.

From what I understand, edge computing processes data closer to the source, which helps reduce response time and improve performance. Instead of sending all information to a distant data center, critical tasks are handled locally or near the device generating the data.

I’d like to better understand how this setup significantly reduces latency in real-world deployments.
  • Is the main advantage simply shorter data travel distance?
  • How does it impact bandwidth usage?
  • Are there challenges in maintaining security and consistency across edge nodes?
Would appreciate insights or examples from anyone working with real-time edge environments.
Thanks in advance!
