Hi everyone,

I’m struggling with heavy ice buildup on my roof this winter and I’m worried it might cause leaks or damage. I’ve seen several remove ice from roof services advertised locally, but I’m unsure whether hiring a professional is better than trying to handle it myself with a roof rake or de-icer.

Has anyone here used a professional service before? How was your experience, and was it worth the cost?

Also, any suggestions on preventing ice dams from forming again would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance for your advice and recommendations.

Hey there!

I’ve been in the same situation a couple of winters ago, and honestly, hiring a professional remove ice from roof service was totally worth it. They used steam to safely melt the ice without damaging shingles, which is a big risk when doing it yourself with sharp tools or too much heat.

It cost me around $300–$500 depending on how bad the buildup was, but it saved me from potential roof repairs later. For prevention, make sure your attic is well insulated and ventilated so heat doesn’t escape and melt snow unevenly.

Also, clear gutters before winter so melting snow can drain properly.
