Anyone else feel like websites can tell you're "active" before you even do anything?

I was browsing a support forum earlier and noticed it said I was "online" the second I landed on the page. I hadn't even logged in or clicked anything. It felt a little invasive, like the site was announcing my presence before I was ready.

It got me thinking about how this technology works and what other people think about it. Is it helpful for getting quicker support, or does it cross a privacy line for you?

I found a site that talks about this kind of technology if anyone's curious: How does this even work?

What's your take? Do you find it creepy, convenient, or just not something you ever notice?
