Does Dropping a Motorcycle Helmet Ruin It?
All the helmets in the market do not feature the same material. Also, the overall design quality differs among companies. Further, you can drop the helmet from diverse heights and hit different substances.
Therefore, it’s not easy to give one definite answer as yes or no it doesn’t ruin the helmet. For instance, a carbon or fiberglass helmet dropping from a height of one or two to the ground or sand may not suffer significant damage that warrants replacement.
But a helmet dropping from the 6 feet height (hook on the wall) onto the hard concrete floor should ignite worry in you. When a poor-quality helmet (say thermoplastic) drops from a lofty height on a hard surface, it's more likely to register significant damage warranting replacement.
Must I Replace My Bike Helmet After Dropping it?
Therefore, must you replace your modular motorcycle helmet after dropping it? It depends on the situation. If it registers any of the following signs, replace it without question:
Displays visible cracks or lines of weaknesses
Has a dent in the outer shell
Loose inner EPS padding
Still, if the helmet falls and hits the ground with your head still inside, you have to replace the helmet. The effect of the drop and your head inside squeezes onto the EPS. And thus, its energy dispersion capability goes down.

But it isn’t certain that a helmet falling down registers lines of weaknesses or crashes. Often a fall from a significant height reduces the energy-dispersing ability of a helmet.
And when that happens often, it reaches a point when the lid has the least protection in a crush.
What Should I Do if I Drop My Motorcycle Helmet?
The first thing is to try and avoid dropping your helmet. The dropping may compromise the helmet's performance instantly on the accumulated drops and eventually produce a detrimental effect.
If you drop your helmet and it displays visible defects it is certain it is gone. Don’t consider reusing it on your rides. The same holds if you crash wearing the helmet. Also, if it doesn’t display a visible sign but fell from a high height (above 4 feet), you better take it for professional checking.
Always exercise caution and avoid dropping or knocking your helmet on other objects. Regardless of the dropping height, most often no helmet fall is safe. The impact may break or crack the helmet instantly. If it doesn’t the effect of the impact may accumulate and slowly compromise the helmet's performance.
And if you suspect your helmet’s degree of protection has been compromised as a result of a fall, it might be true.
Helmet Gurus then recommends that you either replace it or return it to a dealer or company for inspection.
